Tech Team - Goals and Needs

Hey everyone,

In an effort to try to coordinate our technical efforts I'd like us to figure out exactly what our goals are and what we need to accomplish those goals.

Once we figure out exactly what we need, we can figure out what sort of direct action should be taken.

Our main goals include:
Unite all of the team members.
Keep track of who is interested in volunteering and what skills/resources they can provide.
Find and utilize ways to maximize our efficiency as a group.
Create a media engine that integrates and distributes all citizen media into one location. (Live streams, blog posts, official facebook and twitter posts and printable information that needs to be circulated.

Any other main goals we should include?

A secondary goal I came up with a library check in/out system once we actually start occupying.

Our main needs:
... better communication between team leads at the GA assemblies.
... some server space to host the website, forum, etc.
... I need a laptop to work with. At this past GA (10/15) two people offered laptops but I haven't followed up on them yet. I will do that in just a bit.
... I would appreciate some more privileges here on the forum to assist with general maintenance and needs.
... Web Designers / Graphic Designers to help design the website. I can do it but this isn't my strongest area as it takes me forever to come up with something I like.
... Coders. We need to figure out exactly what skill sets everyone has to help determine which server platform we should use. If we have more .Net coders we should use that. If we have more PHP coders, that might be a better option.

I have a test server that we can use for development so the actual server space isn't a huge priority until we have something to upload to it. We just need to figure out a plan of execution to include the needs of as many groups as possible. I'd like to have the entire site planned before we start coding so that we're not trying to patchwork unexpected things into the system.

The twitter needs to be maintained more as of right now it just seems to be linked to the occupy jacksonville tumblr. I can help run the twitter account and spread information through it.

I can provide a Dell E6410. It has Win7-64 bit on it but if a different OS is desired, I'm ok with that. I also will provide a Verizon 4G MiFi. The MiFi is a gadget one can stick in their pocket and provides 5 high-speed WiFi connections. I just got yesterday and it works quite well and is faster than my current DSL connection. Hopefully, we'll have good signal strength with a Verizon tower. Also, got the firewire Canon HV30. I'd prefer someone else to manage this equipment so I can get video with my Sony camcorder.

I don't have much experience with handling the video aspect of things but I'm sure we've got someone who does.

I'd like to set up a tech meeting here soon to discuss some ideas and coordinate an action plan. It would also be nice to do some on sight testing before the GA to make sure that everything is set up properly so we don't run into any downtime.

I apologize for not being a very good admin for the Tech Team. I've got my fingers in so many baskets it's hard to keep track of everything.

I'm definitely open to any suggestions anyone has on how we can streamline things.

Kas has over 50K followers on his twitter... I'd suggest we "take advantage" of his offer to help with the current OccupyJax on twitter...

And sorry for the delayed response guys, we're still working to get everything organized better.

As for web programming, I have experience tinkering with RoR in my spare time, and as far as RoR hosting, Heroku worked well for what little I've produced and hasn't cost me anything.

My real expertise is in C++ and Linux, not sure how helpful that will be, but you never know...

Also, I have a HP-dv6609 laptop with Win7 Ultimate and Ubuntu 11.04 that I can lend to the cause.

For the web stuff we're going to be using Drupal. I'm in the process of getting everything set up now. We will definitely need your linux experience once we get a home office and some servers.

On a related note. I have a friend who has a laptop and server in pawn which he's about to lose. He'd rather donate them to our cause than lose them.
