Hello team!

My name is Josh and I am a member of the Media group. However I post this in an attempt to help better organize Occupy Jacksonville and get a list of contacts from key individuals. This would help better answer some questions that local media, union groups, and other interested parties may have in regards to our movement.

It would be best if we could get at least one point of contact for each group, as well as a point of contact for the moderators of the Facebook page, and twitter accounts. Please contact me either posting here or pm'ing me. Right now the wonderful Ms. Nancy Pardue will be operating and collecting information via phone. I will give you her contact information so that we can create a list of contacts.

Thank you for your time, Josh

I think I'm pretty much the only person on the "Legal Team" at the moment. I'm not really a lawyer or anything either (hence the quotes). Just trying to get something setup with the NLG for some sort of legal support for the protestors - and hopefully counsel in the case of a Gestapo crackdown.

Like I've said on Facebook and in the other Legal topics: I've been in contact with Heidi Boghosian, Executive Director of the NLG, and she's forwarded my information to 3 of their lawyers here in Florida. But I'm still waiting to hear back from them. I'm actually going to be emailing her back tonight, as well as the NLG chapter in Gainesville, if I don't receive anything within the next few hours.

Basically, I'm just making sure we have their support before this thing kicks off.

I am not a lawyer but I am fairly well versed in the art of lawyer magic, I have actually been to court for a resisting charge for not getting out of my car about a year ago and beat that Sui Juris, even thought they had a video of me committing the offense lol. As far as statutes go anyone can look those up. I don't argue statutes I claim rights and use the truth in court. I know first hand JSO can be very aggressive and they often break the law themselves. I can probably answer most questions or at least find an answer. The law isn't as complicated as lawyers make it seem its just the BAR has a monopoly on the game and lawyers write the law to try and make it as convoluted as possible. Hence a tax code with over 55,000 pgs.

Ok so basically my police friend told me that we need to contact the officer in charge of the zone that Hemming Plaza is in, Zone 1. I looked it up online and I believe this is the link - http://www.coj.net/Departments/Sheriffs-Office/Patrol-Division/Zone-1.aspx
I believe we're in Zone 1- Sector A
The officer Assistant Chief Evander Collier IV needs to be contacted now, ASAP. Someone needs to talk to him, or whoever is in charge of Hemming Plaza area, and let him know of what is going on on Saturday. Inform him that we're planning on getting together for a peaceful get together to make signs and talk. That we then plan on taking a walk downtown. Do not mention anything about protesting, marching, etc. because we don't want to have to get permits.
This is so that he can inform his officers so that they are aware and so they are less likely to bother us.
I suggest someone get on this now. Please let me know soon if someone does this. I will do it tomorrow if you haven't done it today or in the morning.

This is the kind of thing I'm wanting actual lawyers to handle. The only thing I like to say to police is "I do not consent to this conversation." Razz

But, I was given the number for a paralegal earlier today. I'll probably be giving her a call in the next few hours, or first thing tomorrow; and seeing if she's willing to handle all of the "foot work." Because I'd rather have someone with some real legal experience handling ALL of the police interaction.

I will take note of this, though. And once I get in touch with someone I'll pass it a long.

PS - STILL no response from any of the NLG people. And no response to the 2nd email I sent to Heidi. These guys are cutting it close... lol

What are you guys looking for a lawyer(s) for anyways? I certainly don't plan on going to jail. Maybe to scare the cops away? Also who would need a permit to do something lawful lol if you call that cop and he tells you you need a permit and people get one I am going to rofl so hard. The only important issue is place. If this plaza is private property you need the consent of the owner to assemble, if its public you do not. Also fun fact you there are no lawyers. You need a license to practice law in the state of Florida and they do not issues such licenses. There are only "attorneys at law"

There is such a thing as planning ahead and protecting oneself. Do you propose we don't do any research or planning and just go head first into the deep end without trying to protect anyone? I don't think so. I don't want to go to jail either and I don't want 500 people to.

Also, a member has already contact the police officer I mentioned so don't bother. We're on top of it. Thanks.

I was just asking. Sounds like your about to all caps rage in here. lol. I wasn't saying it was a stupid idea I was just wondering what you were going to use them for thats all. Maybe the permit comment pissed you off, if so I am sorry I was not trying to offended you. I just thought it was funny (I guess you'd have to see it from my point of view). No like really if you talked to me you would see why I found that so funny. Ok well thanks for all your efforts. peace.

We're just wanting someone with actual legal experience to handle that end of things for us. And free lawyers, such as Graham, in case some of the peaceful protestors get arrested. Public Pretenders are bad, mkay? Wink

O I wasn't even offering counsel or anything of that nature only advice and guidance. For example if someone did go to jail and got a public defender I know how to scare that public defender into actually doing work and not just trying to get you to plea deal, little things like that. I am one of those eh what people like to call freemen. I don't contract with the state anymore. I am one of those people that clear a court room very quick and have a couple of bailiffs breathing down my neck. If you all don't need my advice or want it that is perfectly ok with me I will not be the least bit offended. Good luck with the attorneys.

Sorry to jump in, but every reply here sent me an email so I've been eaves dropping lol. But Techniec, I have to say I agree with you to a degree. But the thing to remember is that this is a purely democratic movement. The organizers have no more power in this than the rest attending give them. As an organizer, I am willing to help guide and toss out suggestions to the rest of my fellow 99%.

There are some who want to know the rules and follow them to the T. There might be those a little bit more vocal about key issues than others. There could even be those with full intent to disregard laws they don't agree with in the name of civil (and god damn I hope PEACEFUL) disobedience. I will try stopping no one from trying to take to the street with a march, but I will let them know the response of the JSO so that as little physical damage as possible will be done to my brothers and sisters of this movement.

My main goal in this is to not have violence enter this, and so far the only ones who have been violent are the cops. You can't blame some folks for being a bit shaken by the image of 3 or 4 women wailing in agony due to an unprovoked canister of mace to the face. Those who are a bit braver, or feel more fervent because of the same image are just as many in numbers as the cautious.

Verbatim, it's because of those women, I'm in this. It's because of those wrongful arrests and beatings, this movement means that much more to me. I don't want to see any of that happening anywhere else in this country anymore and I also don't want what's happening in Wall Street and Washington to continue. We need to be smart and we need to be one step ahead of them if we can. If we resort to violence, we are no better that those officers that wrongfully assault those protesters.
I want to be able to smugly walk the streets on Saturday with my signs and scream my heart out and have them stand there unable to do a thing about it.

with jso warning they will arrest us for feeding the homeless i think they are trying to send a message and provoke something. like i said elsewhere i have also heard of people saying they will feed the homeless to purposely get arrested and we do not need that. but that is a potential hazard at this point. we def. could use legal help and advice..

as far as contacting the officer in charge of that zone, it is a great idea. it would look good on our part to reach out to him instead of just showing up. even though they probably know of the event at this point.
