Unions?

Does it make sense to contact local unions for assistance? I have no idea how much union representation exists in Jax area. News out of OWS indicates AFL-CIO, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Teamsters, New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), American Federation for State, County, and Municipal Workers (AFSCME), Communications Workers of America (CWA), Transport Workers Union (TWU) and Greater Boston Labor Council have joined the cause. This is from article Unions Play Major Role in 'Occupy Wall Street' Protests.

Well the general claim by the media and that some people are getting into their heads is that the Unions decided to get a free ride by joining OWS with attempts to take over the protest in order to push their own agendas.

Just an fyi of how I've heard it portrayed.

we already have some union worker support, IBEW is just one of the unions i saw represented on the 8th...in light of that, i personally think it's a great idea...we can't exclude just because of what we're afraid the media might say...the more diverse the groups represented, the more diverse the folks we will then be able to coax out of their shells to join us...

I saw at least 5 unions representing. Some we pretty good sized groups.

I love the idea of involving the unions. The more support we can garner the better. Is anyone part of a union that might support our cause? What about the Florida Education Association? (http://feaweb.org/). I think that's the big one. I'm sure there are others too.

I've been communicating with the fraternity of police. They say they want to send a speaker, so expect someone to represent them pretty soon.

AFL-CIO was with us shortly on the 8th as well.
