Opposition to corporate welfare Empty Opposition to corporate welfare

First, I want to thank those of the Occupy Jacksonville movement who came out to the protest against corporate welfare for JP Morgan sponsored by the Libertarian Party. Members of the Occupy Jacksonville movement will probably not agree with the Libertarian Party on a lot of issues, but I believe that we agree that corporate welfare is a bad idea. The protest and the speaking out against corporate welfare at the October 25th City Council meeting was a success since the City Council was ready to vote on this bill that night and they put off a vote on this issue until November 22nd. That is good because it gives us time.

Here is my suggestion. The first protest got us some attention, but it has not won the war against corporate welfare for JP Morgan. I believe that another protest would be old news to the media, but if we use another tactic, that could keep this issue fresh in the City Council members' and the media's mind. So let's create large (4 to 5 inches high and wide) red stop sign stickers with the words Corporate Welfare in them, i.e. Stop Corporate Welfare. They should be cheap to get printed by a local printer and would be visible to the City Council members. We would notify all the City Council members beforehand that when they see these stickers, there is opposition to companies getting corporate welfare. Of course, this will require that we get a lot of people out to the City Council meetings who are not the usuals who speak against corporate welfare. The Libertarian Party and Concerned Taxpayers of Duval County have been fighting corporate welfare for years and could use the help of other organizations to build up the opposition to this misuse of taxpayer funds.

The money going to JP Morgan is not the only corporate welfare bill coming up for a vote before City Council. 2011-672 which gives $3,357,500 to First Coast Service Options, a Blue Cross/Blue Shield subsidiary, is coming up for a public hearing on November 8th. And there will be more in the future. I can guarantee that.

I read the story in Sunday's paper about Occupy members wanting to make an impact in Jacksonville. This is a good way for your movement to make an impact and I hope that we can work together on this issue.

Something that I forgot to put on my previous post. I can be reached at 904-504-9315 just in case someone from Occupy Jacksonville wants to talk to me about corporate welfare related City Council bills.

I have one question about this idea. Where do you advocate sticking these stickers? I don't think it's a bad idea, I'm just not sure where they could go where they'll both make a point to the council and still be ok as far as littering and defacement laws go.

I look forward to hearing from you, and thanks for positng. =]

Put the stickers on your shirt and sit out in the audience as the bill is being debated at the November 22nd meeting. I would like the council members to see a sea of red stop signs when they look out in the audience and they know this represents the opposition to the JP Morgan corporate welfare. You could also do the same with t-shirts, but I thought that the stickers would be cheaper.

Thank you, Curtis. I think us standing together and combining our numbers on the issues where we feel the same is a wonderful idea. A group of us will be at the Nov. 8th meeting and we are standing against ALL corporate welfare.

Thank You Curtis I couldn't agree more with Evey and I really like the idea of stickers, I'm just not sure we would have the funding to that though. I will give you a call this evening.

This would not be until November 22nd when the JP Morgan vote takes place. I am trying to find a printer and get the cost. But say a hundred would probably not be that expensive. I am going to talk about it at the Libertarian Party Executive Committee meeting this Thursday and see what is the cost is (VP Richard has a printing firm friend who hopefully can do these labels for us at a reasonable price) and what is in our budget. I will get back to you on Thursday.

Also, you may want to take a look at bill 2011-672 (http://cityclts.coj.net/coj/COJBillList.asp?Bill=2011-0672) - another corporate welfare bill for First Coast Service Options, a subsidiary of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Florida. It takes from the taxpayer $3.4 million this time - more than the JP Morgan bill.

Opposition to corporate welfare Empty Re: Opposition to corporate welfare

I met with Concerned Taxpayers of Duval County on Monday and we discussed strategies for the November 22nd City Council meeting at which the JP Morgan and Blue Cross and Blue Shield subsidiary First Coast Service Options corporate welfare bills will get approved.

I originally had an idea of creating big colorful stickers with anti-corporate welfare messages on them to wear on our shirts. Getting them professionally printed was too expensive. So we looked at making them ourselves using blank shipping labels with phrases like "Corporate Welfare" with a circle with a line through it superimposed on the words. We could color them with yellow magic markers to make them stand out.

Also, we looked at creating fans with distinctive shapes like thumbs up and then turning it over for thumbs down like the Tea Party used at the City Council meeting on approving the budget. This way, we can convey our opposition to the bills without the signs that are prohibited in City Council chambers during the meeting. All of this can be communicated to City Council prior to the meeting so that they know that when they see the stickers and fans that this represents opposition to the bills.

I still have the anti-corporate welfare signs used at the October protest which I can get to the Occupy Jacksonville group prior to the November 22nd meeting.
Unfortunately, I cannot take off again for another protest due to my workload but maybe the guys in front of City Hall could make use of them. I would appreciate if I could get them back since most of them are generic and could be used again in the future.

Lastly, I hope that Occupation Jacksonville members will flood the City Council members' e-mail accounts with e-mails expressing opposition to the corporate welfare bills. They are 2011-662 (http://cityclts.coj.net/coj/COJBillList.asp?Bill=2011-0662) and 2011-672 (http://cityclts.coj.net/coj/COJBillList.asp?Bill=2011-0672). There is another corporate welfare bill for the Bruss Company (http://cityclts.coj.net/coj/COJBillList.asp?Bill=2011-0728) if anyone is interested in speaking against it at the public hearing on the bill on November 22nd.

If someone from the Occupy Jacksonville group would like to talk to me more about this (I would like to hear your ideas, too!), I can be reached at wolfcu@comcast.net and 904-504-9315.

That is enough for now since I need to go to bed!
