Daily Protest Possibility

Post by js22520 on Tue Oct 18, 2011 8:00 pm

I was thinking that since we do not have a location to actually occupy, we could have a decided upon location and time that people could come to each day. We all have different schedules so I'm am sure that we can make a small/medium group each day which people that are not working/ otherwise engaged. This would increase our visibility greatly until we find an area to occupy.

What does everyone think? Suggestions?

hey, it might not be ideal for me but i could be at hemming plaza every day

edit:
logistics...
we need to get in contact with everyone who wants to support a daily protest
we need to get together a rideshare plan to commute the people to and from (i volunteer my car if needed)
we need to get ahold of the appropriate teams to get food, first aid and other necessities in line
everyone should make 2-5 signs to rotate out between days

Well that's just it, if we can generate enough interest, no one person should have to be out there every day.

For Example:
Group A - Monday/ Wednesday
Group B - Tuesday/ Thursday
Group C - Friday/ Sunday
General Assembly - Saturday

..or any combination or number of groups, we would guarantee visibility all week long without very many scheduling issues. Groups could be as small as 4+ (but hopefully larger) in my opinion, any less might be dangerous depending on resistance from passersby. This would also solve the sign rotation that you suggested since no person (and their sign) will need to be there two days consecutively.

I want to protest everyday i don't work. This isn't the time to put on a good show, coming out once a week to gather thoughts. Everyday of the week those thoughts should be heard, so that saturday we can voice them. Occupy = do not leave (except at nights to stay legal)

Do you guys have any ideas for locations? Also, I'm not sure whether it would be best to meet at the same location each time or change it up. Changing it up would get the word out but it may lead to confusion in planning. I am not against the downtown area (as long as it is during business hours/ busy times of the day), just fishing around for suggestions.

Actually, I may have found a good place to occupy...

I'm going to try to get a hold of the lot owners tomorrow and see if they'll allow us to stay there Wink

isnt the problem people sleeping and camping in the parks? does hemming plaza have a closing time?

if we trade out people, some sleep in cars while others are standing, then those standing trade places with the people sleeping, wouldnt that end the problem?

I was just looking through the statutes for Jacksonville park rules and noticed that the "Director of Recreational and Community Services" pretty much makes the rules for the parks. He has the ability to give us access to the parks day and night, as well as the ability to camp there and erect semi-permanent structures. How do people feel about bugging him until he lets us camp at Hemming?

"Sec. 28.709. - Camping and erection of tents and buildings prohibited.

Unless authorized by rule:
(a) It shall be unlawful for any person to camp or otherwise sleep overnight in or upon any park, beach, dock, marina or other recreational facility, without first having obtained a permit to do so from the Director; provided however, no permit shall be required at Katherine Abby Hanna Park or Huguenot Park, provided any applicable fees have been paid.
(b) It shall be unlawful for any person, other than authorized personnel, to build or place any tent (except for tents designed for sun shelter and used during daylight hours), building, shack, booth, stand or other structure in or upon any park, beach, dock, marina or other recreational facility, without first having obtained a permit to do so from the Director; provided however, no permit shall be required at Katherine Abby Hanna Park or Huguenot park.
(Ord. 2007-839-E, ยง 7)" (underlining added by me).

For daytime occupation, what about visible presence on the Southside? Regency Area, near UNF, San Marco, etc. I think that suits the nature of this city - a lot of people live and work on the other side of the river and don't cross over until something calls for it.

I think that he would get a lot of heat from the higher ups if he OK'd us to camp. He may be the head of the department, but he still has to answer to the bureaucratic ladder of bullshit. And of coarse, he would probably just blow us off to begin with.

You make a good point, but if we start spreading out around the city more and more people will feel like we are protesting them personally. When we protest downtown, around the financial institutions, people are able to make the connection. Our protests should only be used against said institutions and the word needs to be spread with fliers, news spots, etc. Once we move into a niche area, we become more contained. But downtown, while it may not be frequented by all of Jacksonville, is the center of it all.

js22520,

I don't think of it as strictly "protesting" though, there is more of an outreach component (it's not like Five Points is the financial center of Jacksonville either). The people who drive by us and honk their horns now know that we aren't pointing fingers at them except to say Join Us. In some cases, perhaps signs need to be focused more on the "SO ARE YOU" part of the message.

I wasn't saying that we shouldn't be reaching out to the community, but I started this tread in hopes of showing our grievances on a daily basis, not just as a weekend affair. I understand that going to other locations could bring more people into the movement, but if we are active enough through our demonstrations and leafleting, the people will come to us.

I agree.

melittophily wrote:(it's not like Five Points is the financial center of Jacksonville either)

That's why I voted against the location.

I know the one thread was locked on the street protesting thing.. But another idea.. Is it legal for us to put signs out like the politicians do? I mean, you see vote for who ever and signs like that all over the road sides. I was sitting at the light at the end of my street the other day and watched a lady in pointy high heels get out at the other light while stopped and almost break her neck trying to put a sign in the ground for some politician. Would be nice if we had some of our own out there maybe even show a link or something where people could get more info. Just an idea..

It shouldn't be illegal if the campaigners are allowed to do it. It's a great idea in my opinion, but I don't have the funds for it. I imagine they aren't terribly cheap. Not to mention they may not last long considering some people really don't like our movement. Even so, I think if someone had the means to do it, it would be good.

On a slightly related note, I know that Florida law forbids the fastening of any sign to anything other than a bulletin board, so this would be a useful workaround. Don't let that deter anyone from stapling a sign to a light pole though, the yard salers, junk car people, etc are always doing it.

LOVE THIS IDEA! Signs that say stuff about being the 99% or just "Me and my house are the 99%" or something!

I feel like if we're to occupy a park 24/7 the most symbolic and the most attention getting park would be Hemming Plaza. It's right in front of city hall. It'd be perfect for demoing on Tuesdays when the city council meets. First Wednesdays we could march around downtown during art walk to make way for the vendors. Its in the middle of downtown and we could address issues of homelessness and poverty and set up a Food Not Bombs or get some of the local churches to donate food to feed the homeless population. It's fairly close to FSCJ campus, we could get students more involved. It's close to the bus station. We could post up bus schedules on the occupy sites. Like others have said its the center of the city. We would certainly have to work on logistics, legal team, prisoner support, and people willing to be arrested, putting together a team that could take care of possible arrestees personal lives outside of jail (if they have no one else to) such as pets, calling employers, etc. If we're willing to break the law if a permit is not granted. That would definitely be a big step to take at this point so I understand if it's not taken as of yet. But I do think if we all started bombarding the Park and Recs office with phone calls instead of just one team or organizing body it'd be a big show of our collective power. And hell yeah! Signs are a great idea. We could go to local business' and ask if they'd like to put a sign in the window and things of that nature. Signs in our yards is a great way to strike up conversations with our neighbors. I love all of you!

Whoa...be careful with putting out the signs please! There is a sign ordinance and it is $100 permit PER SIGN. If you are caught it's a $200 ticket per sign. I cannot even do open houses anymore because I obviously cannot afford the idiot permits. *rolls eyes*

That's what I was wondering when I suggested it. Is there somewhere to go to get that info. I can't seem to come across anything. Of course my power went out in the middle of my search. But any info you could share would be great thanks.

There are some laws so retarded they cant enforce them, this being one of them, they are not gonna waste time fingerprinting signs to find the culprit
and unless they have an officer posted on every street corner, theres not a dang thing they can do

I agree it's hard to trace the signs down but it does happen from time to time. (Usually someone sees you doing it and calls it in and reports you). I can't stand this law because it hurts businesses and Realtors the most. Crying or Very sad
